Just a few of the fantastic images from my recent food photography at Arapina bakery in Greenwich, London.
The brief was for images to continue the theme of previous shoots on the Arapina website. Overhead flatlays with the food arranged with lines and architectural forms.
Our day started at 7am and we worked through to 1am the following day. Once set up and shooting we soon realised that we'd set an ambitious target for the number of planned shots. Especially the first flatlays. Tweaking elements into position took time so it was a massive advantage to be shooting tethered to my laptop so we could see what we were getting immediately and make changes. Trying to share through the viewfinder or using the small screen on the back of a high-up downwards facing camera would have been a real nuisance. We soon got into a flow and worked through the list of shots.
The shoot was during the day in a corner of the working bakery & cafe so we had a few curious customer wondering what we were doing. Come closing time all the staff pitched in helping with chopping and preparing the prop vegetables. The baking staff were actually baking food to the demands of the shot list so everything was super fresh arriving at the shooting table.
Some of my camera gear ended up being really useful for actually getting things set up. My Giottos Rocket Blower became very handy to blast a little air and shift crumbs, nuts & peppercorns into more aesthetically pleasing arrangements. There's a BTS (Behind the Scenes) shot below.
Editing consisted mostly of cleaning up crumbs where there were too many for the Rocket Blower to effectively deal with. Cleaning up the colour of the back ground which had picked up a slight tint in places and adding extra poppy seeds to some of the baked goods.
Arapina specialise in vegan and gluten free food but still make a range of conventional baked pasties and rolls. I have to say that every single thing was delicious and flavoursome and I came away with a couple of goodie bags stuffed with amazing food.
Thanks to the incredible team at Arapina and special thanks to Michaela who has build this awesome bunch of people dedicated to baking the best food in London.
